Message in the Sky is a crowd-sourced public participatory project that pools together the hopes and dreams of our time to map the landscape of our collective human aspiration. Portraying diverse voices around the world, the envisioned project is a time capsule that tells the stories of today, so that we can imagine the future together. This project allows the public to cast their hopes and dreams into the sky, both symbolically and literally. Through a database-driven web interface, either input as text-based messages or recorded spoken word, messages can be read/heard in the context of the real-time sky map. Additionally, a goal of the project is also to encode the messages and ultimately broadcast them into space using high-powered signals from earth.

We now stand at a moment of critical transformation and potent possibility. It is our creative intent, as human aspiration, which carries us forward. Fundamental changes are needed to sustain our communities, and our values, into the future. But, what is fundamental to us, and what constitutes our values? If we understand the landscape of human aspiration, perhaps it can help us navigate treacherous terrain we are faced with. Message in the Sky, as a global project, seeks to offers a vital platform where human aspiration can come together; dreams can stand side by side, and hope is visible.

Through two historical projects greatly influenced the imagination of this project: the 1974 Arecibo Message directed by Carl Sagan and A Message from Earth in 2008, the imagined scale of this project is unprecedented in human history.

In 2014, Message in the Sky was piloted in Dubai during the International Symposium for Electronic Art (ISEA 2014). In 2015, the project was brought to the desert community of Joshua Tree.
